Welcome!

Sat Mar 8, 2008, 11:25 PM
Welcome to the site for NeoVictorians, and Victorian era enthusiasts. This is s a place for people to post art they think fits into the category of Victorian, or Neo Victorian. My name is Robert Scott Pfau, also known as Robert Ghastly, and I invite you to browse around, leave a message or two, maybe even join this little community. The rules are simple:

-Work must be focused on the Victorian era. That means nothing modern, I'd say past the 1920's in style, but there are always exceptions if the influence is right.

-The Victorian Era was considered to be from the 1850's to the early 1900's, when modernism dominated. If you decide to submit work onto this site, try to avoid images, or subject matter beyond the Roaring Twenties. But since modern technology didn't really spread around the globe for quite some time exceptions could be rural arias, persons affected by the depression, western images, and military technologies.

-Respect others work. Simple, yes?

-Share thoughts!

-Be creative.

What is NeoVictorianism?

NeoVictorian is a life style, a mind set, and a fashion statement. It's not something everyone can do or follow. The three basic rules of NeoVictorianism were outlined by fellow NeoVictorian and me. This is not something we try to press onto anyone else, but if you agree with these three basic principals you could consider yourself to be a NeoVictorian. Or a prude.

1) There's a line between sexy, and slutty. A woman can look sexy without wearing a skirt that is a grand total of one foot of denim, and a top that screams "look at my boobs". We feel that if you want to be respected, and be seen as a person with standards then look the part. Flesh is very attractive yes, but the allure of mystery is oh so tantalizing. I'm the type of person who enjoys a little intrigue and mystery because it adds a sense of adventure, and I love adventure.

2) Guys, the whole baggy pants thing... that just has got to go. I really don't want to see your boxers hanging out of your dickies. The only reason it started was that so gay prisoners wouldn't have to pull their pants up so far when they were finished doing the deed. Further, vulgarity on shirts is obnoxious. "Fuck" is a word that should be used in privacy, and not spouted about in common English. Grow up.

3) Gentlemen are gentlemen, ladies are ladies. Respect each other as such, and always try to maintain a level of decorum.

I feel I must clarify the aspect of Neovictorianism. The ideas of calling ones self "neovictorian" really puts one in a new catigory of social subcultures. Neovictorians are not emo. We do not find ourself wolloing in self pitty of the silly things that do not matter. We pick ourselves up and do what is nessisary to move on to lead an honest, productive, and fulfilling lifestyle.
After looking observing subcultures withing subcultures I must recognize a different aspect of neovictorians: Gothic Victorians. Gothic Victorians and Neovictorians differ in several ways, however there is not better victorian than another. I've outlined Neovictorians below, but I suppose it would be wise clarify the differences.
-Gothic Victorians are really into the vampire, daggers, pale makeup with black lipstick, and nail polish aspect of the old Goth lifestyle.
-Neovictorians aren't into that sort of thing. We tend to not go for the gothic music, or, for example, jewlry. I shall try to clarify the differences better, but for now the best I can do is sum it up as such: Neovictorians come out day and night. With absolutly no offence to my Gothic Victorian friends out there.

While some might say that the difference would breed animosity, I say no. We are both Victorian in our own wonderful way. Gothic Victorian art is welcom on this site, and you may see Gothic Victorian images in the favorites gallery. However, I proudly declare I am a Neovictorian.

Being Neo Victorian does not mean I dress up every day with a tie, vest, waist coat ect, but I do try to live by the ethics of the day. I strive for perfection in all I do, and take pride in my work. I take a lot of direction for my conduct from the ethics of the Victorian era, not just aesthetics. I truly admire the craftsmanship, and effort that the people of that era put into the things they did. In our push button world it's all too easy to complain about waiting in line at Starbucks for five minutes to get your Iced Quad Venti Carmel Macchiato when in those days the luxuries of such a superfluous treat wouldn't be feasible. Living day to day was what we would now consider a Herculean effort to most! I'm not bashing the modern world, many wondrous applications have come from our advanced technologies in the fields of medicine, art, architecture, science, exploration, so on and so on adinfanatum. But when was the last time you sat down and wrote a letter to someone rather than push a few buttons on your cell, or e-mailed them? The connection we have to each other now days is so phenomenal, a lot of people would be lost without their black berry, or lap top. Yeah, I'm one of them, but I'd like to think I've limited my codependency on these things. We've almost lost our connection with ourselves in our urge to have the most friends on myspace, or have the latest and greatest gadget. It's about being who you are, just for yourself. No one else. Anyways, just remember, it's not about a life of deprivation, or trying to commit your self to a world that is long gone, but just doing ones absolute best, and striving for perfection. You'll never be absolutely perfect, but as long as you keep trying, you set a tough standard to beat. Cheers!
